What exactly is Microsoft XDocs?

Steve Ballmer created a little stir with this announcement last week. It's too early to say for sure, but the product, as Microsoft describes it, strikes us as less of a general-purpose XML editor and more of a forms builder and processor. That is, it looks like fundamentally a workflow tool, to enable companies to migrate from client-server forms processing to a Web-based process. A worthy goal, we think, but not quite the tool you might be pining for that allows business user-friendly XML authoring for all your disparate docs. Interestingly, Ektron's new browser-based XML widget seems to target many of the same forms-based workflow requirements as XDocs...
